A carved wood Chiwara (Ci Wara) headdress attributed to the Bamana peoples of Mali, standing approximately 106 cm tall in the vertical style. The piece depicts a pair of stylized antelope-derived forms with tall, gently curving horns rising from an openwork base structure, their heads finished with fine incised linear and dotted surface patterning. The forms are mounted atop a rounded, dome-shaped base designed for attachment to a woven cap, worn on top of the head during performance. The wood shows an aged, dark patina consistent with handling and ritual use.
Chiwara headdresses are among the most iconic works of Bamana art, danced in pairs (male and female) during agricultural ceremonies to honor the mythical being said to have taught humans to farm. Vertical-style Chiwara, as seen here, are associated in particular with Bamana communities in the Ségou region, and combine abstracted antelope, anteater/pangolin, and bird-like elements believed to reference fertility, cultivation, and the sun's arc across the sky. Male and female headdresses are typically danced together, with the female form often carrying a "baby" figure, representing the continuity of agricultural knowledge across generations.
