A hand-carved wooden antelope mask attributed to the Bobo (Bwa) peoples of Burkina Faso, standing approximately 45 cm tall. The mask features a pair of long, gently curving ridged horns and flat triangular ears painted in red-ochre. The face carries a strong central ridge running down the muzzle, picked out in natural tan against a dark charcoal-black ground, with the surface finished in the bold geometric polychrome characteristic of Bwa masking traditions. The rounded snout is finished in dark pigment.
Among the Bwa, antelope and other animal masks are used in masquerades tied to agricultural cycles and clan initiation ceremonies, with the bold black, red-ochre, and tan palette carrying symbolic associations tied to clan identity and spiritual protection.
