Dan-Guéré Mask Côte d'Ivoire / Liberia border region, West Africa Wood, pigment, traces of applied binder Height: 36 cm

A carved wood mask in the fierce, geometric idiom associated with the Guéré (Wè) and neighboring Dan carvers of the Ivory Coast–Liberia border zone. The face is dominated by large tubular, drum-like eyes and a wide, projecting mouth carved with a row of sharp, bared teeth — the aggressive expression typical of masks used to embody bush spirits, warrior spirits, or judicial/enforcer roles within men's societies. A raised, domed crown sits above the face, and small rounded elements hang beneath the chin, suggesting a beard or string of attachments now worn or partly lost. The surface carries a mottled, sooty two-tone patina consistent with pigment and handling built up over repeated use.

Masks of this type were danced during funerary rites, war-related ceremonies, and as instruments of social regulation, their staring tubular eyes and toothy grimace meant to project menace and supernatural authority rather than naturalistic likeness.

A bold, graphic sculptural presence — well suited to a collection of West African tribal art or as a striking standalone display piece.
