A carved wood treasury/storage chest attributed to the Dogon peoples of Mali, measuring approximately 35 cm long by 14 cm wide. The rectangular chest features a hinged lid carved in low relief with three vertical rows of stylized ancestor figures, each topped with an elongated oval head and simple facial features, above tiered ladder-like geometric elements and a central almond-shaped motif. The lid and body are bordered with incised chevron/zigzag banding running along all edges. The chest stands on four sturdy tapered legs and is surmounted by a small carved figure or animal finial at the top of the lid hinge. The interior is hollowed to form a lidded storage compartment, with the lid swinging open on a wood peg hinge as shown.
Among the Dogon, carved wood chests and boxes of this type were traditionally used to store valuables, ritual objects, or personal items, often kept within family compounds or granaries. The carved ancestor-figure and geometric motifs relate to the same visual vocabulary found on Dogon granary doors and shutters, believed to carry protective and symbolic significance tied to lineage and fertility.
