About the Figure:
A tall standing figure carved in the elegant, elongated style characteristic of Bamana sculpture. The head is topped with a distinctive tall, pointed conical coiffure, framed by small flared ears, above a long columnar neck fitted with a carved collar or ring ornament. The torso and arms are richly decorated with fine incised geometric patterning — crosshatched diamonds and chevron bands — running along the limbs, a hallmark decorative convention in Bamana figural carving. The figure's arms extend downward with hands meeting at the abdomen, and pendant breasts mark the figure as female. She stands on a rounded base carved with further incised linear decoration, lending the piece a grounded, monumental presence despite its slender proportions. The wood carries a warm, deep patina throughout, with lighter wear visible at the coiffure, shoulders, and other points of handling.
