The rounded snout is finished in dark pigment, and the piece shows an aged, worn painted surface with visible cracking to the horns and pigment loss consistent with age and use.
Among the Bwa (sometimes referred to as Bobo Fing, though "Bobo" and "Bwa" are related but distinct groups worth noting for collectors), animal masks such as antelope, hawk, and buffalo forms are used in masquerades tied to agricultural cycles and clan initiation ceremonies.
