Origin: Burkina Faso — Lobi peoples
Height: 57 cm
Material: Carved wood, aged natural patina
Condition: Age-consistent surface wear; visible fine age cracks along the torso and legs (typical of genuine old Lobi wood figures); stable structure throughout
About this piece:
A slender, elongated standing figure carved in the direct, unembellished style characteristic of Lobi bateba figures. The rounded head features large carved ears, deep-set eyes, a straight nose, and a protruding mouth, set atop a long, columnar neck. The torso is minimally modeled, with pendant breasts marking the figure as female, arms held close to the body, and long, slightly parted legs tapering to simple feet. The wood carries a warm, weathered patina throughout, with fine natural age cracks running along the torso and legs — consistent with genuine old age rather than damage from mishandling.
Cultural Significance:
Bateba figures are central to Lobi spiritual and protective practice, created to house or represent bush spirits (thila) that guide and protect individuals and households. Kept in family shrines, these figures were consulted for guidance, protection against misfortune, and mediation between the living and the spirit world. Unlike the more elaborately decorated masking traditions of neighboring Burkina Faso peoples, Lobi figures favor a direct, unadorned naturalism — their simplicity is intentional, reflecting the personal, intimate relationship between a figure and the spirit it embodies rather than aiming for decorative display.
Notes for Collectors
Fine age cracks are disclosed for transparency and are typical of genuine old Lobi wood figures; they do not affect the piece's overall stability.
Recommended care: keep away from direct sunlight and high humidity; a light museum wax may be used for surface stabilization — test on a small area first.
