A hand-carved wood mask attributed to the Nuna peoples of the Gurunsi cluster, Burkina Faso, closely related to Bwa masking traditions of the same region. The mask features a crescent-moon superstructure at the top, below which sits a diamond-form element with bold black-and-tan X-and-triangle geometric patterning.

The face is dominated by a pair of large, deeply carved coiled/spiral bosses — a hallmark motif in Gurunsi masking, often read as stylized eyes associated with hawk or nature-spirit imagery — divided by a vertical red-ochre band at the bridge. Below the face, the mask tapers into a long, blade-like chin element carved with the same interlocking geometric patterning. Height approximately 28 cm.

Nuna masks are used in masquerade performances tied to initiation, agricultural ritual, and the honoring of nature spirits. The bold polychrome geometric surface decoration and spiral eye motifs are believed to carry symbolic meaning tied to specific bush spirits represented by each mask type.
