A vintage dark-patina mask from the Ogooué River basin of southern-central Gabon, attributed to the Punu/Lumbo–Vuvi stylistic group. Hand-carved in wood with a blackened surface and traces of red pigment, this is the darker counterpart to the region's famous white ancestor masks — black masks of this type are associated with male ancestral spirits and night masquerades rather than the idealized female beauty of the white okuyi form.
The face shows the refined features of the tradition: a calm, meditative expression, softly lidded downcast eyes, gracefully arched brows, and a narrow ridged nose set beneath a smooth domed forehead. Its most striking feature is the dramatically elongated, forward-curving beard, highlighted in reddish pigment — a character trait marking an elder or male spirit figure.
The mask shows genuine age and wear consistent with ritual use: surface erosion, pigment loss, a rich handled patina, and minor age cracks — all speaking to its history and authenticity. Please see photos as part of the description.
