Item Overview:
We are proud to offer this exceptional, hand-carved wooden figure originating from the Attie people of the coastal lagoon region of the Ivory Coast. Standing at an impressive 53 cm (20.8 inches), this piece boasts extraordinary sculptural presence and embodies the distinct aesthetic principles of Attie craftsmanship.
As detailed in the images, the figure features a beautifully pronounced ringed neck, a traditional marker of wealth, well-being, and idealized beauty within the culture. The face is masterfully rendered with a serene expression, slit eyes, and a classic lobed coiffure. Moving down the torso (see DSCN0643.jpg), the figure displays a prominent, protruding umbilicus framed by precise geometric scarification, underscoring the deep cultural reverence for ancestral lineage and continuity.
Figures of this nature were typically commissioned by diviners or wealthy individuals for protection, to honor spirit spouses, or to serve as focal points in shrines. The wood exhibits a deep, encrusted patina indicative of age and historical use.
