About this piece:
A distinctive Baga mask with a bold, split crest rising from the crown, flanked by ribbed, feather-like wing elements extending down either side of the face. The central facial area departs from more naturalistic conventions, featuring a cluster of small drilled circular openings arranged vertically in place of a conventional nose — an unusual, strongly abstracted device characteristic of the inventive, non-naturalistic approach found in Baga ceremonial carving. Below, a wide, gently curved mouth is rendered with vertical slatted openings, adding further graphic rhythm to the piece. The wood shows a warm, weathered patina throughout, consistent with genuine age and handling.
