About the piece:
A carved wood maternity figure depicting a seated mother holding a child, rendered in the naturalistic yet formally stylized manner characteristic of Senufo statuary. The mother's face features a tall, crested coiffure with a distinctive vertical projecting element, deep-set carved eyes, and a protruding mouth with visible teeth. Her torso displays fine incised scarification lines at the shoulders and chest, with pendant breasts marking her maternal role. She sits upright on a carved stool, cradling a child figure against her lap, hands supporting the child's form. The surface carries a rich, warm two-tone patina — darker at the head and upper torso, lighter and more worn across the lower body and stool, consistent with age and handling.

Condition note: A visible area of surface loss is present on the lower arm/torso (see detail photo), where the aged patina has chipped away to reveal the lighter wood beneath. This is an honest, disclosed condition issue and does not affect the figure's structural stability.

Senufo maternity figures are among the most iconic sculptural forms of West African art, historically associated with the **Sandogo** female divination society and broader themes of fertility, ancestry, and the continuity of lineage. Far from purely decorative, these figures were often used in shrine contexts or displayed during important community ceremonies to honor motherhood and invoke protective ancestral presence for women and children.
