Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo — Yaka peoples
Height: 58 cm
Material: Carved wood, dark aged patina
Condition: Age-consistent surface wear; stable structure
About this piece:
A boldly carved Yaka maternity figure with a distinctive coiffure featuring two pointed, upward-projecting elements at the crown, flanking a composed face with arched brows, almond eyes, and an open mouth. The torso displays fine crosshatch scarification patterning across both breasts, with a central raised ridge running down the abdomen to a scarified pubic area — markings historically associated with fertility and feminine beauty ideals within Yaka culture. The arms terminate in ridged, banded bracelets at the wrists, and the figure stands on large, splayed feet with notched, claw-like toes, grounding the composition with a bold, powerful stance. Deep, dark patina throughout, with lighter wear at points of handling.
Notes for Collectors
Recommended care: keep away from direct sunlight and high humidity; a light museum wax may be used for surface stabilization — test on a small area first.
